It May Be Your Last Chance to Run The Lack - As you likely know by now, Euell Threshman passed away in early May. The heirs plan to sell the property and have denied access for boaters. At the same time Lackawaxen was named River of the Year by the state of Pennsylvania and a two day sojourn is planned over June 12, 13 & 14. Go to www.riveroftheyear.com PPL has authorized a 1400-1500 cfs on Monday June 14 from 8 am - 4 pm.
After much scrambling and cooperation, we have permission for a one time access at a second location on the Lack on Monday June 14. Repeat: this is a one time, special permission! Here is your chance to get on this water - legitimately! We need 6 - 8 NCSP volunteers to provide land support for the Monday June 14 release. The guests will be in KC rafts. We need the area mowed/cleared, help to launch 10 + rafts and police the launch area so not a speck of trash is left. In return, you are welcome to run the river with us and enjoy a Jerry Wickness lunch at the Rowland bridge. (You may remember that Jerry catered our 30th birthday bash at the Schoolhouse) This will also be a "Euell Threshman Memorial Run" The trip will end at KC Lukes Landing.

The annual training weekend will shortly be upon us. There is a whirlwind of activities going on to get ready. Bill has been working hard pulling together what we expect to be another great training program along with the rest of the training staff. Dick has met with our friends at Kittatinny and Cedar Rapids to once again to get permission to use there facilities; he has also contacted the Shohola Township to let them know that we would be training so if a 911 call comes in, “ People are in the river “, they will know about it. NPS’s Joe Nicholson will talk with the land owners along Shohola Rapids about our training to ensure they are not surprised. Ingrid of the National Park Service and Mary K are coordinating the Saturday lunch. DJ and Troy have arranged the annual training weekend dinner and getting tables and tents for the command center. We’ve restocked our NCSP supplies for sales. Need a new shirt or throw bag? We’ve got them. These are just a few of the preparatory activities; many other members are also hard at work. So it is time for all of us to get ready for the up coming training weekend and season too. I have signed up for my annual CPR and First Aid classes with the American Red Cross, took equipment out of the garage and attic, ordered some more stuff out of the NRS catalogue and scheduled weekends in my calendar to ensure I can be on the river at least 4 days. I schedule many more days but can’t always make them. I do know that if I don’t schedule time on the river, others in my family or work will schedule them for me, but not on the river. I am excited about the upcoming season. We are planning to work even closer with the National Park Service. This should help expand both our training program and theirs, leading to a safer river for everyone. I look forward to new learning during the training weekend, in season weekend short training sessions, helping the park guests, but most of all being on the river with my friends in the NCSP. See you soon. Ray Mei Commodore |

Lackawaxen Named River of the Year 2010
PA's Dept of Conservation and Natural Resources named the Lackawaxen "River of the Year 2010" "A recreational treasure renowned for its fly-fishing and canoeing, the Lackawaxen harbors a wealth of bird and animal species". said DCNR Acting Secretary John Quigley. "Selecting the Lackawaxen River better enables DCNR to stress the value of healthy forests and greenways and encourage stream-side planting under its TreeVitalize program", said Acting Secretary Quigley."Whether it's educating the public on issues impacting the Pocono Plateau, such as gas drilling's impact on the environment and water resources, or touting tree planting, the Lackawaxen is an excellent teaching tool."
